You’ve been dreaming about it. You’ve been planning. And now you’re ready to begin. It’s time for your kitchen remodel.
It’s time for the process to begin, and you’re probably wondering how long it will take. As with every project, even if you make a timeline, there’s room for it to change. However, you can do a few things to cut down on the disruptions you might experience, and you can figure out a general plan of when your process is going to be complete.
The Nuts and Bolts
There are a whole number of things that might be going into your kitchen remodel. Depending on what you’re doing, they might include:
- Cleaning
- Planning
- Demolition
- Electrical
- Plumbing
- Framing and Drywall
- Paint
- Cabinets and Fixtures
- Doors and Surrounds
- Trim and Finish Work
For each of these stages, the completion times will vary depending on the size and scope of the project. Your kitchen will likely be different, but here’s a rough breakdown of some times that you might be able to expect:
Cleaning: This stage happens in the start and end of the project. When you start, you want to make sure your room is prepped for remodeling, and all the items you need moved are moved. Plan up to a week for this. At the end of the project, you might expect one day to let the room vent.
- Planning: Planning can take as long as you want it to take, but longer planning results in a more thought out kitchen. You might have been planning to do a remodel for years, but give yourself a month of actual targeted planning work with focus on details, instead of thinking in the big picture.
- Demolition: Up to three weeks.
- Electrical: Up to a week.
- Plumbing: Up to a week. This is also often lumped in with electrical work as well, if they need to be done in your remodel.
- Framing and Drywall: About ten days.
- Paint: Five days, including drying time
- Cabinets and Fixtures: About ten days.
- Doors and Surrounds: About five days.
- Trim and Finish Work: Up to a week.
Create a Punch List
When your remodel is going through all these steps, you’re probably going to have questions about what’s happening in your home. Now is not the time to keep to yourself - this is your remodel, so you can ask any questions that you want to ask. Ask your kitchen designer to create a list of concerns with you that you’ll be able to ask either to them or to the contractors. You can walk through the job site together and voice your concerns, so that you’re totally happy with the product in the end.
Make Room For Change
The silent, eleventh number on the remodeling list is change. When you’re going through the entire project, you might think of something additional you want to include in your kitchen. Or, you might be looking at the way that the remodel is going, and decide that you might want to make a few alterations. Deciding that you want to change something in your remodel is common, but will inevitably push back the timeline. It’s better to change your kitchen to the way you want it in the initial remodel than look back years later and wish you had spoken up and taken a little more time, so don’t hesitate to communicate how you feel.
Plan the Dates
Planning your remodel near a holiday or an event will add extra stress to your entire project, so it’s best to schedule during the least busy time of your year, if possible. Even choosing a time where you’re going to go on a vacation can help you feel less stressed about the remodel if you’re removed from the situation for a short period of time. You don’t want to be gone the entire length of your remodel, because observing the changes being made to your home are important. But when you can’t use your kitchen for an extended period of time, it can be a good excuse to get away for a little while.
