We are seeing lots of mixed metal finishes and a trend toward warm metal finishes such as antiqued brass, copper finishes and oil rubbed bronze in kitchen design. More and more, clients are mixing metal finishes throughout the kitchen with great success. They may choose a stainless steel under-mount sink and appliances and pair it with oil rubbed bronze faucets and cabinet hardware.
I’m thrilled to see this trend toward the warmer finishes in kitchen design. These finishes work well with warm wood tones and compliment the mid-toned wood finishes that are currently popular. Just as gold toned jewelry is making a comeback in the fashion industry, we are seeing these gold tones in the accents and “jewelry” of the kitchen (and bathroom!). The softer finishes of these warm metals, more antiqued or matte and not shiny, are a growing trend as well.
The trend in “cooler” metals is to chrome finishes rather than brushed nickel. The shine is adding sparkle and punch, particularly to bathrooms. And the added bonus is that bright chrome tends to be a less expensive finish than some of its’ counterparts.
Whether you go warm or cool, combining metal finishes can have a big impact on any kitchen design or bathroom design. It is the final touch that sets the style of your space. The best part is you get to choose since it is your space and you will be the one to enjoy it every day!
